German Village

German Village is one of the area’s most desirable neighborhoods in the city and a; top tourist destination.  It is also one of the oldest neighborhoods in Columbus, and a nationally recognized model of historic preservation.

German village was originally laid out in 1814 – just 2 years after the founding of Columbus – and was settled in the 1830’s by German immigrants who went to work in the breweries immediately to the west.  These settlers built the small brick cottages that are the neighborhood’s hallmark.  German Village’s historic character is evident in its brick streets, mixture of homes, and commercial space, and carefully preserved architectural details.  It is located immediately south of downtown Columbus.
